Our turbomachinery project uses advanced CAD, CFD and in house developed programs to design, simulate and manufacture a turbopump to compete in the annual Race 2 Space competition.

What is Turbomachinery?

Turbomachinery is the system of pumps and turbines used to move propellants around a rocket engine. In liquid and cryogenic rocket engines, these machines spin at extremely high speeds to pump propellant into the combustion chamber at high pressure. This lets the engine burn much more propellant and produce far more thrust than it could using tank pressure alone.

Turbomachinery Projects

This project is also the sole project dealing with cryogenics/ rotational dynamics to this degree, and the considerations/ methods of handling that come along with them. This is an incredibly valuable aspect of the project, that is useful for various industries in both propulsion and other rotating assemblies.

Palermo 1 [Turbopump]

Integrate into ceres

The proposed Palermo 1 architecture is a single shaft, gas-generator cycle turbopump. This is classed as an open cycle turbopump as the Preburner exhaust exiting the turbine is not routed back into the main combustion chamber. The single shaft design couples both centrifugal pumps onto the same shaft as the turbine. These pumps draw in low pressure propellants and output them at a higher pressure suitable for the Ceres 1 engine. Small amounts of propellants are tapped off after exiting the pumps and are fed into the Preburner. The Preburner is a bipropellant rocket engine that provides high pressure driving fluid to the turbine, which in turn drives both pumps on the shaft.

Ceres 1 [Engine]

Competed in 2025 Race 2 space

Electric Pump Fed | Regeneratively cooled | IPA/LOX

With a target of 8kN thrust, the electric pump fed iteration of Ceres competed in the 2025 Race 2 Space. However, due to mass flow limitations, it achieved 4.3kN - a still commendable result. Palermo 1 will replace the electric pump and improve the Ceres Project.
